Bondage Spreader Bars

Why a Bondage Spreader Bar works so well

A spreader bar might seem like a bit of an advanced thing to add to ones bondage collection, but really it is one of the most practical bondage devices available. This is because in a very basic bondage setup, which most would start out with, anything beyond cuffing someone's wrists or feet together starts getting complicated very quickly. Do you tie them spread eagle to the bed? Easy enough if you have a four post bed, but if not then its harder. Even if you have a four poster, now you have to tie each limb to the respective post. Very effective, but can take some time.

If you think about it, a lot of the purpose in this is rendering the person, open, vulnerable, and, with spreading their legs, accessible.

A bondage spreader bar accomplishes all of this in a much simpler manner, and is most often used with the legs. This is why they are so popular and often considered essential.

What sort of Bondage Spreader Bars are available

Generally speaking any sort of spreader bar for bondage can be broken down into two group. Fixed length or adjustable. Fixed length (see fixed length bondage spreader bar picture below) is simple, generally less expensive than an adjustable bondage spreader bar and often quicker to deploy and to store.

After your bondage scene is complete. An adjustable bondage bar has the advantage that you only need one to fit a variety of spreads, It is also possible to adjust the spread of someone without having to remove and switch to a different bondage bar. Transportation is often easier as adjustable bondage spreader bars can often be broken down into their component parts and fit into smaller luggage. This can often be difficult with a thirty inch fixed length bondage bar.

Deciding on what Bondage Spreader Bar to add to your BDSM scenes

Probably the first step here would be looking at what you want to accomplish. Do you have a single bondage position in mind that really turns your crank and that's what the spreader bar would be for? If so then possibly a fixed length bar would be best. Using a thirty inch fixed bondage spreader bar with some ankle cuffs is probably the most common situation for this.

Maybe you want multiple positions, or would like to be able to travel to a friends with the bar in a small bag.

If this is the case then you might want an adjustable bondage spreader bar.

Shown to the left, this adjustable bondage spreader bar gives a nice easy to use solution that will accommodate any spread. If you already have cuffs, we do make this in a non cuffs version so you could attach your own cuffs with a snap or carabiner

Maybe you want an all in one solution. Wrists as well as ankles bound to the bondage spreader bar. This is great for a face down ass up position that is so useful.

Final thoughts on set up

Whatever bondage spreader bar you decide to go with there are probably a few things to keep in mind.

  • Psychology - Though a simple device, any spreader bar can impart a far stronger psychology than one might expect. Be very aware of this with your partner. Though they may have been tied to the bed plenty of times before, it is quite possible having their legs held apart by a spreader bar is far more impactful in terms of vulnerability etc.
  • Suspension - Bondage spreader bars are not for suspension unless they are specifically rated as such. Never suspend someone or attempt to lift them by the spreader bar. Bondage spreader bars are generally made to spread limbs apart, not to support the weight of a person. If you want to suspend someone get a suspension bar specifically rated for that purpose.
  • Locks - Be aware of your locks. Bondage spreader bars often use hasp cuffs. This helps prevent the sort of entanglement one would get with buckle cuffs and the extra straps those require to fasten. It can really add to convenience to purchase several padlocks all keyed alike for use with the spreader bar, and for any other bondage purposes. Keep these locks separate, and don't use them on the tool shed one day and in the bedroom the next. You want to make sure your keyed alike locks don't get confused with other locks and have to be struggling to figure out what key works where with someone tied up who really has to get to an appointment. If you have several locks keyed alike you will have plenty of extra keys and can have more than enough primary key sets, back up key sets etc.
